This policy explains what happens to the personal information you give the waitlist for The Second Immigration, what it is used for, who else can see it, how long it is kept, and what you can ask to have done with it. Reading it should take about four minutes.
The waitlist at temisansagay.com exists for one purpose: to let readers hear about The Second Immigration, book one of The Japa Diary, and about readings and signings connected to it. Submitting the form means you consent to the collection and use of your information as this policy describes. If any part of it does not suit you, the answer is simply not to submit the form, and you can leave the list at any time afterwards.
Temisan Sagay, in Ontario, Canada, decides how information from this site is handled and is the party responsible for it. Questions, requests and complaints go to connect@temisansagay.com.
No other person or company shares control of this information. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated before the change takes effect.
Nothing else is requested. There is no payment step, no account, no password, and no field asking for your postal address, your phone number, your employer or your date of birth.
No special categories of information are collected: nothing about your race or ethnicity, health, religion, political views, trade union membership, sexual orientation, biometrics or genetics, and nothing about criminal matters. Please do not send any of that by email either, since there is no need for it.
Three ways, and no others:
Personal information about you is not bought, rented, scraped, or received from data partners, advertising networks, list brokers or social platforms.

Your name is used to address you properly, so the email reads like a letter rather than a circular.
Submitting the form is your express consent under Canada's anti-spam legislation to receive those messages, and the record described in section 3 is how that consent is evidenced. Handling of the information is governed by Canada's federal private sector privacy law and by the privacy law of your province where that applies to you.
Your information is not used to build an advertising profile, is not used for automated decision making, and is not used to target you with advertising on other platforms.
Messages are delivered through an email service acting on the author's instructions. Depending on that service, an email may contain a small invisible image, sometimes called a pixel or a web beacon, that reports whether the message was opened, and links may be routed through the service so that clicks are counted. That information is used only to tell whether announcements are reaching people and whether an event invitation was of interest.
Two ways to stop it: set your email program to block remote images, which prevents an open from being recorded, or leave the list, which stops the messages altogether.
This site sets no cookies of its own. It runs no advertising trackers, no remarketing tags, no social media pixels and no analytics package. Nothing on the page follows you to another website.
One external request is made: typefaces load from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers and Google receives your IP address and browser details as part of serving the font files. If that concerns you, blocking third party requests in your browser leaves the page fully usable, only with different lettering.
If analytics, a video embed or an advertising pixel is ever added to this site, this section will name it before it goes live.
Like effectively every website, the host keeps automatic access logs. Those records can include your IP address, the browser and operating system you used, the page you requested, the site you arrived from, and the date and time. Logs are used to keep the site running, to diagnose faults, and to investigate abuse or attempted intrusion. They are held for the short period the host retains them and are not used to build any profile of you.
Your information is never sold, rented, traded or given to advertisers or data brokers. It reaches other parties in four situations only:
Both act on instructions, are permitted to use the information only to provide their service, and may not use it for their own purposes.
Information may be disclosed to comply with a law, a court order, a subpoena or a lawful request from a public authority, or where disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of the author, of readers, or of the public, including in the investigation of fraud or misuse of the site.
Should a publisher, distributor, bookseller or event partner become involved in the book, your details will be shared with them only where that is necessary to deliver something you asked for, such as an event registration, and only after you have been told. Your details will not be handed to a publisher as a marketing list without your agreement.
If the book, the series or this site is assigned, sold or transferred, the waitlist may transfer with it. In that event you will be told by email and given the chance to leave the list before your details are used by anyone else.
The host and the email service may store or process information on servers in other countries, including the United States. While information is in another country it can be subject to that country's laws, including lawful access by its courts and authorities. Providers are chosen with a view to reasonable protection, and submitting the form means you understand that this transfer takes place.
Your name and email are kept until you ask to be removed, or until the waitlist has served its purpose and is closed. When you unsubscribe, your details come off the active list promptly. A minimal record of the unsubscribe may be retained, since that record is what prevents you being added again by mistake, and the consent record described in section 3 may be kept for the period Canadian anti-spam law expects. Server logs follow the host's own short retention period.
The site is served over an encrypted connection. The stored list is held in a location that is not reachable from the public web, access is limited to the author and to the service providers named above, and the form carries a check that rejects automated submissions.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be promised. If a breach occurs that creates a real risk of significant harm to you, you will be notified and so will the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, as the law requires.
Requests go to connect@temisansagay.com and are answered within 30 days. Enough information may be requested to confirm that a request really comes from you, which protects you rather than obstructs you. There is no fee, although a request that is repetitive or clearly excessive may be declined.
Readers of a book about leaving one country for another tend to be spread across several, so these rights are set out plainly. Where the General Data Protection Regulation or the UK version of it applies to you, the lawful basis for sending you email is your consent, and you hold the rights to be informed, to access your information, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict how it is processed, to receive a copy in a portable format, to object to processing including direct marketing, and to withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything done before you withdrew it.
Use the contact address above to exercise any of these. You may also complain to your national data protection authority, or to the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom, although a chance to put things right first would be appreciated.
Your personal information is not sold, and it is not shared for cross context behavioural advertising. No financial incentive is offered in exchange for it. You may request to know what is held about you and to have it deleted, using the contact address above, and you will not be treated differently for asking.
Browsers can send a Do Not Track signal, and no consistent standard exists for honouring it. That signal makes no practical difference on this site, since no tracking technology is present to switch off.
This site is meant for adult readers and is not directed at children. Information is not knowingly collected from anyone under 18. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has submitted their details, write to the address above and the entry will be deleted.
Where this site links to a retailer, a venue, a publisher or another third party, that destination is not controlled by the author and has its own privacy practices. Reading the policy of any site you go on to use is worth the minute it takes.
Counts that cannot identify anyone, such as the number of people on the waitlist or how many readers are in a given country, may be shared with a publisher, an event partner or the public. Information used in that way carries no name, no email address and nothing else that could reasonably identify you.
This policy may be revised, and the current version will always appear on this page with the date it took effect at the top. A change that materially affects how your information is used will be announced by email before it applies to you, and continuing to use the site after a change is posted means you accept the revised policy.
